The Ross County Sheriff’s Office alerted Western Union stores about a wire scam targeting the elderly, 10TV News reported on Wednesday.

Deputy Dave Weber said that a woman was scammed out of $2,500 when she wired money to a con artist impersonating her grandson.

The Chillicothe Gazette reported that she was a victim of a common scam called the “grandparent scam”.

The scammer calls and claims to be the persons grandchild. They claim they are in jail in another country and they need money wired.

The Chillicothe grandmother wired $2,500 and then tried to wire $400 more for a plane ticket home. The woman was prepared to send the money, but the bank was closed.

Weber said he alerted Western Union stores about the scam.
