Delaware County Sheriff's deputies were actively searching for a person who bailed from a vehicle after a suspected burglary Tuesday morning.

According to the sheriff's office, a woman returned to her house, located in the 4500 block of Olentangy River Rd., to find a man inside. The man drove off in a white minivan.

The man was stopped by deputies along state Route 315, just north of Powell Road, after about a 4-mile pursuit. The man then bailed from the van and ran away, 10TV’s Chuck Strickler reported.

Delaware officials sent phone-message alerts to residents to warn them to close their garages and lock their doors. The code red alert was cancelled at about 3:30 p.m. because officials said that they did not believe the man was still in the Delaware area.

Resident Doug Buell said that he was pleased to receive the alert.

“It was useful,” Buell said. “We’ve never received one like that before. We immediately took it seriously and locked our doors and became more vigilant.”

The sheriff's K9 unit was launched, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol was helping search by air.

K9 units from four other local departments also assisted in the search. The officers were in Powell for a training session on Tuesday morning.
