Demolition crews started demolition work at the Westerville Square Shopping Center on Thursday.
The construction includes a new Walmart store, which is scheduled to open next summer. It will also include a redesign and renovation of the Westerville Square plaza on Schrock Road.
An effort to halt construction of the store fell 36 votes short last year, 10TV News reported.
Opponents had expressed concerns over noise and traffic that they feared would accompany the new store.
