Police on Tuesday continued to search for a man in connection with another man’s Memorial Day shooting death.
Police arrested Thomas Benford a short time after the shooting, which left Jeffrey Stewart dead, 10TV’s Chuck Strickler reported.
Investigators were searching for Joey A. Davis in connection with the shooting.
Police said that Benford, 34, and Davis, 30, were charged with murder.
Davis’ address is listed as the same as Stewart’s, but police would not confirm how or if the two men were connected, Strickler reported.
Stewart was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight along the 900 block of 11th Avenue.
Stewart, 52, was taken to Grant Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head, where he later died.
Terica Brown, Stewart’s friend, said that she was still trying to come to grips with her friend’s death.
“I keep crying, keep crying, because it doesn’t seem real,” Brown said.
Brown said that she and her son were having a Memorial Day cookout at Stewart’s home a few hours before he was shot and killed in front of his home.
“He was like one of the coolest guys you’d want to know, real cool, just a sweetheart,” Brown said.
Brown said that things turned violent in a matter of seconds.
“What in the world, you know, all this gunfire, shots being fired and stuff,” Brown said. “I’m running down the street, I’m like, ‘Who got shot, who got shot?’ Nobody said (anything), and there he was, in the middle of the street. It hurts so bad, because he was a real true friend.”
Brown said that she was going to miss everything about her friend.
“He was like one of the coolest guys you’d want to know, real cool, just a sweetheart,” Brown said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Squad at 614-645-4730.
