The National Parks Service says endangered piping plover birds have established a nesting foothold in the Glen Arbor area of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

The service says there have been several years of limited piping plover nesting in the Glen Haven area.

This year, it says four pairs have made the beach their summer home.

The parks service long has protected piping plover nesting areas on North Manitou Island, which also is part of Sleeping Bear Dunes, along Lake Michigan in the northwestern Lower Peninsula.

The service says the Glen Arbor beach nesting area is easily accessible and "provides visitors an excellent opportunity to view a rare bird in its natural habitat."

It says there are some temporary fences to protect the breeding pairs.
