Ohio Senate Approves Exotic Animal Bill

UPDATED: Wednesday April 25, 2012 10:20 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio - State Senate members approved a bill Wednesday that would regulate the ownership and sale of lions, tigers and other exotic animals in the state.

The proposal cleared a legislative panel on Wednesday morning, sending it to the Ohio Senate floor.

The vote was 30-1, with the nay coming from Republican Sen. Kris Jordan.

The vote came after a fifth and final committee hearing was held on Tuesday, allowing those with opinions to testify on behalf of or against the proposed legislation, Senate Bill 310.

Zanesville Republican Sen. Troy Balderson said that one of the goals of S.B. 310 was to protect citizens.

“The goals of S.B. 310 are simple, to protect citizens, to preserve the legitimacy of law-abiding individuals who are for animals and to put standards in place to ensure safety of animals,” Balderson said.

Opponent Evelyn Shaw said that she felt cheated.

“It was a done deal before it ever started,” Shaw said. “He never once listened or took our thoughts into consideration or really sat down with us. This was a done deal before this.”

The next stop for the bill is the House floor, where it will be debated again.
