Investigators said that eight people were forced to find places to stay after a deadly Thursday morning fire.
Fire crews responded to an apartment building, located in the 1600 block of West 5th Avenue near Grandview Heights, and found a 36-year-old woman inside the burning apartment at about 2:30 a.m., 10TV’s Tino Ramos reported.
Rescue workers attempted first aid on the woman, identified as Angie T. Zartman, who later was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said that residents banged on apartment doors and used car horns in an attempt to alert others to the fire.
Jeffrey Taylor, 39, who rescued himself from the burning apartment was hospitalized with minor burns, Ramos reported.
The American Red Cross was called in to assist those who were displaced.
Fire officials said that the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials.
