Part of the Ohio Department of Commerce will have exclusive jurisdiction in overseeing the construction of shale gas processing plants in the state.
Gov. John Kasich signed an executive order Monday to give the Division of Industrial Compliance that jurisdiction. Previously, such construction plans would have been reviewed either by that division or a local building authority.
His office said that putting that responsibility solely at the state level will allow for consistent management of projects involving underground shale gas resources that cross manmade borders of different municipalities.
The office said that the order enables state authorities to immediately begin reviewing construction plans and building code compliance for the projects.
Local building authorities still could oversee any construction beyond a specific processing plant.
