Neighbors in Clintonville found buildings and vehicles vandalized with spray paint Sunday morning, 10TV’s Kevin Landers reported.
Warren Van Tine’s car was tagged by the vandals, he believed it was a hate crime targeting his son.
“My son is black in a predominately white neighborhood,” said Van Tine. “I think there has to be greater awareness that this is actually going on. We think that things are getting better but there are still a lot of undertones of tension, of hostility, of frustration out there.”
Police said vandals spray painted 11 swastikas on the Calumet Street Bridge along with the word “toke.”
Dave Southan, a Clintonville-area commissioner, said younger vandals may be to blame.
“The younger sect have nothing better to do than destroy someone else’s property,” said Southan.
Clintonville-area commissioner Ron Wood issued a statement which said, “We have no tolerance for people who target people based on their race, religion or sex. That is not what this community is about. We have contacted the city in hopes of removing these images as quickly as possible.”
