Police spent Friday afternoon handing out dozens of safety-first pamphlets and encouraging residents to attend their meeting next week.

Businesses were on high alert following a recent rash of robberies that targeted businesses and their cash, 10TV's Jason Frazer reported.

"If they see a drawer full of 20s and 100s, they might see an opportunity and we want to minimize that," Play It Again Sports Manager Dave Tanner said.

Tanner said cash registers will be emptied more regularly, and he also made sure the store's video system is recording everything.

Hilliard Division of Police Officer Hyda Sloane said there have been five robberies within an eight-day period. Last year, there were only 10 robberies the entire year, Frazer reported.

"If you're leaving late in the evening, and you feel a little shaky, you can call us and we'll do an escort for you," Officer Sloane said. "We want everyone to come out and express any concerns they have."

Sloane said the best thing to do if you find yourself in a robber situation is to remain calm.

The business meeting is on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Safety Service Building on Northwest Pkwy., Frazer reported.
