More than 900 people filled the stands at Thomas Worthington High School on Friday night to show their support for a man who has touched the lives of many in the community.
“When I walked in there and saw a sea of blue with the “Gus Strong T-shirts,” it brought me to tears,” Thomas Worthington baseball coach Stephen Gussler said. “It’s amazing what people can do and what they’ll do for you.”
Gussler, 37, was thrown a curve ball in 2008 when he was diagnosed with colon cancer, 10TV’s Andrea Cambern reported.
Student Dylan Holmes said Gussler’s battle inspired students to show him how much they cared at the basketball game between Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne high schools.
“I’m hoping it meant the world to him to see how much he really means to the community,” Holmes said.
Gussler currently is battling stage four colon cancer but said that he appreciates every moment, especially those like the one on at the basketball game on Friday night.
“Every day is a blessing for me,” Gussler said. “Many people complain about the daily grind. I look forward to it. Being here tonight just means a lot.”
