Authorities said that a retired police officer was killed when the driver of a rig swerved to avoid slow traffic and hit three vehicles on Interstate 70 west.

The crash Tuesday closed part the highway at Livingston Avenue for more than six hours, blocking traffic during the evening commute.

Police said that the rig driven by a Wisconsin man struck three vehicles, including one who suffered serious injuries.

They said that 25-year Columbus police veteran Daniel Klingerman of Pataskala was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said that Klingerman served on the force from 1966 to 1991.

The other drivers involved in the crash did not need medical treatment.
