Police continued to investigate on Tuesday evening the early-morning shooting death of a gas station night clerk.
According to investigators, the clerk was opening the Sunoco gas station, located at 201 W. Bridge St., at about 6 a.m. when the shooting victim, identified as Mohamed S. Hassan, 46, was found inside.
Investigators were reviewing surveillance video of the slaying, which was Dublin’s first in 12 years, 10TV’s Chuck Strickler reported.
Dublin police Chief Heinz von Eckartsberg said that he was frustrated.
“I live in Dublin,” von Eckartsberg said. “This happened very close to where I live and we’re going to do absolutely everything in our power to catch these people responsible.”
Police said that they were working to determine if the shooting had anything to do with a rash of recent robberies in the Dublin area.
Von Eckartsberg said that a McDonald’s restaurant was robbed at gunpoint on Jan. 17, and about two weeks later, an armed robber struck the Max & Erma’s on Frantz Road.
Three days after that, a man robbed the United Dairy Farmers on Muirfield Drive, police said.
A Quiznos restaurant was robbed near Tuttle Mall the following day, Strickler reported.
“I can’t tell you right now whether the robberies are tied into this homicide in any way at all,” von Eckartsberg said.
Dentist Tim Edwards said that he was concerned.
“It happened right across the street from a school, but it doesn’t change my opinion of Dublin,” Edwards said.
Craig Price of the Dublin Barber Shoppe, which has been a community fixture since the 1930s, said that he was taking precautions to stay safe.
“We close and lock the doors earlier at night, right after the last customer leaves,” Price said.
Police planned an educational meeting for Thursday night at the Dublin Community Recreation Center to give residents and business officials tips on how to stay safe, Strickler reported.
Police said that anyone with information should call 614-410-4847.
