The owner of a maroon Dodge Charger that was allegedly involved in a deadly hit and run crash said on Tuesday that he was not behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
The car was found Monday afternoon on Wellington Avenue, on the northeast side. Gil Pilier Morla said that he recognized his car when he saw it on the news.
Police said that a maroon Dodge Charger was driving the wrong way on Interstate 71 north near Morse Road when it struck a minivan at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, killing both men inside. The driver of the Charger fled the scene, 10TV’s Kevin Landers reported.
Morla said that he let his friend borrow his car the night of the crash.
"The only thing I want to tell you man is, you know, show your face," Morla said in a plea to his friend. "You're trying to get other people in trouble and that's not fair."
Morla said that he called his friend when he heard he was involved in a fatal crash.
“I said, ‘Yo, what happened? Because somebody tell me the news, and I told him what happened.’ I said, ‘Are you OK? You weren’t involved in an accident?’ And he tell me no,” Morla said.
Investigators had yet to determine if Morla's car was the same one involved in the crash, but said the damage to Morla's car was consistent with what witnesses told them.
A woman, who witnessed the crash and stopped to help, said that she was in shock after the crash because it could have been her car.
“I just kept compressions going for as long as I could until they got there,” the woman, who requested anonymity, said.
She said the driver of the Charger was going about 80 miles per hour.
“Right behind the driver side door is where he actually made contact, and then he took off and kept going,” the woman said. “That was the amazing part that he just kept going.”
Police said that they have not released the names of the men who died because they have not been able to locate the next of kin, Landers reported.
