Westerville Police said Saturday that a new computer system will change the way they tackle crime.

"What this system does is it allows us to take the report in the field, transmit it electronically, and it just stays electronic," Westerville Police Department Lt. Tracy Myers said.

In the past, officers spent less time in the community because they were busy completing paperwork , 10TV's Danielle Elias reported.

"The officers now have a ton of information that they can now have right at their fingertips," Myers said. "As soon as it's dispatched, a couple clicks and they have the information they need about the house, any people we have information on, or even where other officers are."

The police department spend nearly $1 million on the new program, but Lt. Myers said the technology will shorten the time it takes to complete paperwork and allow them more time in the community, Elias reported.

The time booking people in jail was cut down to 20 minutes, whereas it used to take two hours, Lt. Myers said.

"I can go through, with a few mouse clicks, and produce a report with all the people we've had contact with that criteria," Lt. Myers said.

Westerville Police said the more they use the new program, the more efficient they will be, and the more they can be on the streets, Elias reported.
