Investigators will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death of music superstar Whitney Houston.

Houston was found dead in her hotel room Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. She was 48. Police said that there were no obvious signs of criminal intent.

Houston died just hours before her mentor and music executive Clive Davis was to hold his annual pre-Grammy concert and dinner. She had been expected to attend

Aretha Franklin said that she was stunned at the death of her goddaughter.

Mariah Carey tweeted that she was heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of her friend. Carey said, "She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."

Singer and songwriter Barry Manilow said that he cannot believe that Houston is gone. He said that his heart goes out to her family, to Clive Davis, and to everyone who knew and loved the "amazingly talented and beautiful artist." He added, "I will always love her."

Motown great Smokey Robinson said that he has known Houston since she was a little girl and loved her. As he puts it, "She was like family to me. I will miss her."

Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said, "A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice."

From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists, wowing audiences with her effortless, powerful vocals. But she fell from the charts as her majestic voice was ravaged by drug use and her regal image was tarnished by erratic behavior.

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," ''Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You."

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like "The Bodyguard."
