Police on Thursday were searching for the person they said stole a mother’s car with a 4-year-old girl inside.
According to Sondra Hunter, she left her daughter in her car to pick up her son from school when a man stole her car.
“I got out of my vehicle and maybe walked eight steps to get my son,” Hunter said. “I left my daughter in the car because it was really cold yesterday, and I just hear a car taking off, and I just started screaming, ‘My baby, my baby!’”
Police said that while trying to get away, the man who stole the car struck another car a few hundred yards from the school hard enough to cause the airbags to go off. The thief then ran away, 10TV’s Karina Nova reported.
“I could see my daughter look at me, and the look on her face was so scary,” Hunter said. “I’ll never forget it.”
Hunter said that her daughter was strapped into her car seat and was uninjured in the crash.
“Never do it, never do it,” Hunter said. “It happens that fast, where your kid can be taken.”
Hunter said that she did not think the man realized her daughter was in the car but still wanted the thief to pay for what he did.
“I’m hoping they find him, I really hope they find him, because he needs to answer for that,” Hunter said.
Police said that they believed the thief was a high school student, Nova reported.
