The Athens County Sheriff’s Office said that a new scam appeared to involve its own department, Consumer 10’s Kurt Ludlow reported on Wednesday.

Officials said that the scammer was able to make the caller ID appear to be from the Athens County Sheriff's Office.

The scam is done by using a cell phone app that allows people to change what appears on caller IDs, Ludlow reported.

According to the sheriff’s office, once a person answers, the scammer says that there are delinquent parking tickets that need to be paid.

Officials warned that the phone app would make it possible for scammers to pretend to be just about anyone, Ludlow reported.

The sheriff’s office said that anyone who has received similar calls should contact the office at 740-592-3264.
