Donations will pay for a new police dog for the Genoa Township Police Department, 10TV News reported Friday.
Donors gave $10,000 to buy and train the new police dog, 10TV News reported.
The board of trustees approved the use of the donation money on Thursday.
"It is great to hear that our fundraising effort exceeded expectations and the overall purchase came in under bid providing for additional funds to help pay for care of the new K9," trustee Rick Carfagna said.
The new police dog will replace Brutus, the township’s current K9 officer, 10TV News reported.
Brutus is expected to retire on Mar. 22. The police dog was recently diagnosed with a disease similar to multiple sclerosis in humans, 10TV News reported.
Genoa Township tax money will not be used to fund the new K9 recruit.
