Police said on Friday that a home was burglarized after a man posing as a city water department employee was let inside the residence.
According to police, a man approached a homeowner on Folkstone Road and asked to inspect the waterlines inside the home after report of a water main break in the area.
Police said that after the man left the home, the homeowner realized that items were missing.
The man was described as in his middle 20s with dark hair and eyes, and he had a badge but no identification card, police said.
Investigators said that homeowners should use caution when approached for service work at their homes without prior notification from a business or organization.
Police said that the purpose of the request often is to divert the homeowner's attention, while an accomplice searches for valuables.
Frequently used identities by robbers include gas or electric company employees, a water department employee, a cable TV employee, a roofing or gutter repair contractor or government personnel, police said.
