Police said on Friday that they were searching for the man they said killed a 19-year-old in 1998.
Investigators said that several witnesses helped them solve the slaying when they came forward in October.
Charges were filed Friday against JoVan Harris, who they said shot and killed Mendell Campbell in retaliation for a robbery, 10TV's Jason Frazer reported.
Witnesses helped police identify Harris, 33, and were able to use forensic evidence to link him to the slaying.
"We all watch TV and think DNA and all these things solve crimes," Columbus police Detective Dana Farbacher said. "It actually is not what solves a crime. The biggest crime fighting tool in the world is a telephone. Pick up a telephone and let us know if you heard anything or saw something that solves a crime."
Police said that they did not know if Harris was in central Ohio or another state.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Columbus Division of Police at 614-645-4760.
