A man who was assaulted in another country and transported to the U.S. for medical care died on Thursday.

David Bompart was helping to build an orphanage in Haiti when a person robbed and shot him at a nearby bank.

Bompart, 50, was transported to a hospital in Miami last week. He was too critical to be brought back to Columbus.  He and his wife worked in Haiti to rebuild the lives of families who lost everything from a recent earthquake, 10TV News reported. The two co-founded the charitable organization Eyes Wide Open.

Bompart's wife, Nicolle Bompart, said on their organization's Facebook page on Thursday that she hoped friends and families would share pictures and memories.

"Today is the day I never hoped would come, and these are words I never hoped to type," Nicolle Bompart said.   Friends, family and strangers reached out with thousands of dollars in donations for Bompart's transportation and medical care, 10TV News reported.
