The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 on the Far East side were reopened after a multi-vehicle crash that killed at least one person.
According to ODOT, the eastbound lanes were reopened at about 4:45 p.m. after the road was closed for about five hours.
According to police, the crash involved three vehicles, a rig and five people, including a toddler.
Police said that the toddler was riding in a car headed westbound when the driver lost control, hit a cable barrier and crossed into the eastbound lanes, 10TV’s Tanisha Mallett reported.
The vehicle hit the rig, which then lost control and hit two other vehicles in the eastbound lanes, police said.
The crash also affected the ramps from Brice Road to I-70 east, I-270 south to I-70 east and I-270 north to I-70 east.
The westbound lanes also were affected, Mallett reported.
Emily Williams said that she witnessed the crash.
“When I saw the semi hit, I saw him run out to see if everything was OK,” Williams said. All I saw was the cars hitting and a bunch of smoke. I thought the cars were going to go on fire.”
One driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other drivers were taken to Grant Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The toddler and the driver of the rig were expected to be alright, Mallett reported.
The victim's name was not immediately released.
