Fire officials continued to investigate what caused a south side home to go up into flames on Monday morning.
Three people escaped the fire at a home located at 1843 Bruck St. at about 6 a.m. after Sharon Jacobs screamed to alert her son and his girlfriend, 10TV’s Shayla Reaves reported.
According to investigators, Jacobs spotted the fire on the front porch of the home.
Columbus Division of Fire spokesman Michael Fowler said that furniture that was stored on the porch burned quickly.
“The sofa goes up very fast, and it’s out in the open, it’s almost like putting paper in a fire pit and lighting it up,” Fowler said.
Those who were in the home said that they were able to escape through a back entrance, Reaves reported.
Crystal Hylton, Jacobs’ son’s girlfriend, said that the family moved into the house two weeks ago.
“It’s just hurtful, really hurtful,” Hylton said. “If it wasn’t for his mom screaming and yelling, we would have all just died.”
Jacobs, 58, was transported to Grant Medical Center for oxygen.
Arson dogs sniffed for possible accelerants used to start the fire, and investigators were still working to determine the cause of the flames, Reaves reported.
