Though the mystery of how 3,000 panties ended up alongside a Fairfield County road has not yet been solved, the undergarments will be put to use, The Lancaster Eagle Gazette reported Thursday.

The panties will be strung up along the Purple People Bridge that connects Cincinnati and Newport, Ky.

The undergarments will hang in honor of Jaymie Johnson, who died in February 2010 after battling cervical cancer.

The panties symbolize each woman who will lose her life to gynecological cancer each year.  The display will go up on July 14.
