One of the most common resolutions each new year is to go on a diet.
A goal with such great intention can go horribly wrong if not approached the right way. The first step to tackling this resolution in 2012 is to approach it as a lifestyle change, rather than 'going on a diet'. Make reasonable first steps to create the healthy lifestyle you want.
It is important to create nutrition goals that are attainable, specific, measurable AND positive. For instance, instead of, "I will eat healthier this year', jot down your goal as, "I will pack a healthy lunch at least three times a week instead of eating fast food". Also, do not try to change everything at once. Make small steps and changes that add up to reach your ultimate goal(s). Here are some examples to get you going, and more importantly, that you can stick to throughout 2012!
1. Eat AT LEAST one serving of vegetables per day. Note; this is an example of shooting for less than idea. Of course, you SHOULD be eating 5+ servings of veggies per day. But if you're not eating any, trying to start with one serving is a great way to reasonable work veggies into your life.
2. Drink AT LEAST six glasses of water per day (same note as above).
3. Eat whole grains as a carbohydrate choice for at least one meal per day (same note as above).
4. Make 'low calorie' evening choices. Instead of an after work cocktail or sweets, choose a hot cup of herbal or no calorie flavored tea.
5. When eating, eat! Do not multi task while you eat (i.e. read, watch television, drive, answer email, etc.). Sit at the table and enjoy your meal.
6. Just say 'NO' to cravings. Here are some tricks to battle against bad cravings; chew gum, brush your teeth, drink a large glass of water, take a brisk five minute walk, or wait 20-30 minutes to see if you really are hungry or simply craving.
7. Switch from high fat to lower fat products. For example, instead of cream, use milk in your coffee.
8. Start each day with a well-balanced, nutritious, breakfast.
9. Pack healthy snacks ahead of time when you know you will be on the go.
10. Become more conscious of what is being consumed throughout the day. Start a food journal to track your meals, snacks and mood.
Do not be discouraged if there is a misstep. Simply move forward and continue on your journey to a better, healthier, you. As discussed, start with one or two of the suggestions above. After they become part of your daily routine, add another, and continue, until you reach your ultimate resolution of a healthier lifestyle!
