Mayor Michael Coleman and the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation announced on Wednesday that about 1,200 people were hired during its Hire1000 initiative.

COWIC president and chief executive officer Suzanne Coleman-Tolbert said that 1,188 jobseekers found jobs.

The Hire1000 initiative was a partnership between Columbus, COWIC and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, 10TV News reported.

In September, the partners reached out to hundreds of local businesses and asked them to bring their open positions to a series of job expos, officials from the Mayor's Office said.

More than 3,000 Ohio residents attended five expos that featured a total of 79 employers from September to November, 10TV News reported.

"This was a community effort," Coleman-Tolbert said. "Columbus' Department of Development provided the resources for us to create a pathway to work for jobseekers across central Ohio. The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department opened the doors of neighborhood community centers for each event, the Columbus Chamber reached out to its members and our private employers stepped up to hire.

"Through the public-private partnerships and under the leadership of Mayor Coleman, we are pushing the limits of this economy," Coleman-Tolbert said.
