A 17-month-old baby was in critical condition Friday after reports that the child was beaten and left for days without medical treatment.
The baby boy's mother and mother's boyfriend were charged with causing critical injuries to the baby.
Amber Silcott, 18, and her boyfriend Scott Riley, 22, were charged with child endangering and taken to a Scioto County Jail, Pike County Sherriff Richard Henderson said. Both were in jail on $30,000 bond and were scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 19.
The baby was airlifted from the Pike County Community Hospital to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus on Thursday night in critical condition, 10TV News reported.
Paula Travis, the family's neighbor, said that she knew something was wrong when she was sheriff's deputies at the house Friday morning.
"I cried all morning," Travis said. "I had to leave work because I was so upset."
Travis said that she never had any complaints about her neighbors before.
"He was a happy, go lucky little boy," Travis said.
According to investigators, the boy's injuries included serious bruising from which they said they were not sure he would recover.
Major Nakoa Spradin of the Pike County Sheriff's Office said that investigators do not believe either Silcott or Riley was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time the baby sustained the injuries or at the time of arrest.
