Shots Fired After Men Confront Officer Disguised As Delivery Man

UPDATED: Monday December 12, 2011 11:56 AM

Investigators said that they were forced to open fire Saturday night, after an altercation on Wrexham Avenue in the Hilltop.

According to police, they were called out to west Columbus around midnight after a pizza delivery driver suspected something unusual during a delivery run.

Undercover SWAT members were called in because of a recent number of robberies involving delivery drivers, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

"There were three officers in the van at the time. One of the officers was posing as a delivery man. He got out and attempted to deliver a pizza, and he was confronted by two individuals," Sergeant Rick Weiner with the Columbus Division of Police said. "There was an altercation, and at which time, two of the officers fired their weapons."

Police said that one of the individuals who confronted the officer disguised as a delivery man was shot in the leg and transported for medical attention. Another person was taken into custody, McEntyre reported.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

It was not immediately known if the incident was related to recent robberies in the area.
