Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier was named the Big Ten's freshman of the week, the conference announced Monday.

Shazier recorded a team-high 15 tackles in his first career start for Ohio State.

He helped deny Penn State on four goal-line attempts from inside the two-yard line, keeping the Buckeyes within one score late in the third quarter.

The Freshman of the Week honor was the first for Shazier, from Plantation, Fla.  The last Ohio State player to be announced Freshman of the Week was quarterback Braxton Miller.
