Students Pepper Sprayed, 3 Arrested At Block Party Near Ohio State Campus

Three police officers suffered minor injuries early Sunday while attempting to break up a large block party near The Ohio State University campus.

Police said several large house parties on Woodruff Avenue, just east of High Street, got out of control after midnight, 10TV's Jason Frazer reported.

The house parties were part of a block party known as Woodfest, Frazer reported.

"There were a couple of times when cars tried to go through the street and people were throwing cans of beer at them and just empty boxes," said student Jake Rodgers.

When officers told partiers to clear the streets, they said some refused to cooperate and began throwing bottles.

Officers used pepper spray to control a crowd that had swelled to more than 1,000 people and get the students to disperse.

"Our response was more than appropriate," said police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner. "We cannot allow that to go on. We cannot afford not to act."

Three people were arrested.

Michael Earl Shivak, 21, Matthew Jason Coleman, 19, and Brian Franklin Witt, 21, were all charged with assaulting on a peace officer.

The injured officers suffered cuts and bruises, Weiner said. One officer was hurt when someone threw a bottle at their head. All three were expected to be OK.
