Franklin County Sheriff Karnes Treated For Pancreatic Cancer

Franklin County Sheriff Jim Karnes announced to his staff on Tuesday that he is being treated for pancreatic cancer.

Karnes, 71, told 10TV News that he plans to continue his job while undergoing treatment.

Karnes was elected sheriff in 1992 and is the longest-serving sheriff in the county's history.

He has been with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office since 1963.  According to his biography on the sheriff's Web site, Karnes has progressed through the ranks and supervised many divisions within the office before retiring as a lieutenant in 1992.

Karnes and his wife, Sandy, have been married for 46 years and have three daughters and three grandchildren, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office Web site.
