Williams met with reporters on Tuesday to set the record straight on his manager, Columbus-based promoter Al Battle, 10TV's Jerry Revish reported.
Battle, who like Williams has a criminal record, has been criticized recently for his checkered past.
"He was given a second chance and done very well," Williams said. "What other kind of example do I need in my camp to help guide me to my second chance?"

Battle said he is helping Williams negotiate a book, movie and reality show deal in Los Angeles.
"My life was at a low point," Battle said. "However I never lost the desire to transform myself into the person that I know God had intended for me to be."
Williams said he is living in Los Angeles to take advantage of voice-over work.
He said he is in an outpatient program for drug and alcohol addiction.
Williams will do an exclusive interview with the CBS Early Show on Wednesday
morning. The CBS Early Show airs at 7 a.m. on 10TV.
