Ohio State AD Dispels Rumor That Tressel Will Step Down

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith used his Twitter account on Saturday to dispel Internet rumors concerning Jim Tressel's coaching status.

A blog was posted on Saturday to the Web site, ChicagoNow.com, which said Tressel would step down after the Sugar Bowl, 10TV's Beau Bishop reported.

The post set Internet chatter ablaze as the Buckeye football program is dealing with other issues related to the suspensions of six players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, for NCAA violations.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith addressed the rumor about Tressel on Saturday, using his Twitter account to dismiss any notion that he would resign.

"Merry Xmas everyone," the post read.  "Go back to drinking your eggnog!! Rumors not true."

A high-profile Ohio State recruit also told 10TV News on Saturday that he had heard nothing of Tressel's possible resignation, Bishop reported.
