A nightly walk turned into a terrifying experience on Wednesday, and a northeast side woman credited her dog for helping save her life.

A friend at work introduced Kelly Malling to her dog, a husky named Conner, about six months ago, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported on Thursday.

A stroll through Malling's neighborhood had become a nightly ritual, but on Wednesday it was anything but routine.

Malling said that at about 9 p.m., a man approached her from behind while she was walking near the intersection of Milford Avenue and Greenwich Street.

"This guy (came) up to me and (said), 'Give me all of your money,'" Malling said. "So I turned around and there's a gun in my face."

Conner quickly jumped into action, Malling said.

"Connor attached himself to his right arm, and he bit and snarled and scraped and growled," Malling said.

Malling said that the man screamed and when Conner let go, he ran.

"If I didn't have Conner, I'm fairly sure the guy could have shot me, taken me somewhere, done anything," Malling said.

Malling called Conner a hero and said she would never again go for a walk without him by her side.

Malling was not able to give police a good description of the gunman and no arrests have been made, Hirsch reported.
