A teen was arrested early Saturday and accused of fatally shooting another teenage boy.

Police said they arrested a 16-year-old boy for allegedly shooting Daequan Nix, 15.

Nix was found lying in front of a home in the 1400 block of North Fourth Street at about 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, 10TV's Ashleigh Barry reported.

Malyk Shelby  pulled the trigger, police said.

Nix's mother told 10TV News that the shooting stemmed from a fight over a girl.

"That was my baby. My youngest," said Nix's mother, Renee Vail. "Cant' bring his life back so they probably need to be locked up for a long, long time. Forever."

Shelby's mother, Kimyatta Smith, said she wants the Nix family to know she is sorry. Smith said her son told her he was no where near the area when the shooting happened.

"He just said 'mom, I never did it, I wasn't outside," Smith said. "I just want to get to the bottom of it. I want his family to know that my heart goes out to them."

Vail said she accepts Smith's apology.

"I accept her apology," Vail said. "It's not her fault and these teenagers are just making bad decisions."

Shelby is expected to in juvenile court next week, Barry reported

Nix was a student at Brookhaven High School.

Friends and family plan to hold a candlelight vigil in his honor on Sunday night.
