There are cell phone applications for almost anything, but a new, 99-cent app could help save your life.

Developers of Silent Bodyguard say among the apps for fun and games, their offering could help you if you become the victim of crime, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported on Tuesday.

Using the app you select contacts that you would like to notify in the event of an emergency. You are allowed a phone number and three e-mail addresses.

If you become a victim, or witness crime, just press the "whistle" and your phone will begin discretely sending messages to those contacts letting them know something is wrong.

Along with each text or e-mail, comes a link to a map showing your location, Hirsch reported.

The messages automatically continue to go out with updated information about every 60 seconds, as long as the app is activated on your phone.

We went for a drive with Silent Bodyguard and activated it to see how well it works.  First, we passed through the Short North, where an alert was sent out to our contacts showing our exact location.

Then we made or way up to Crew Stadium where, again, an e-mail and text went out pinpointing where we were.  Finally we ended up deep within the Park of Roses in Clintonville, and the app worked, making sure our contacts would be able to find us.

Silent Bodyguard got our location within about 50 yards, Hirsch reported.

There are several other apps with similar features. None of them are designed to replace a call to 911, but the makers of Silent Bodyguard said the one-button touch feature could come in handy in an emergency situation.
