Making the fruits and vegetables your family eats safer had farmers and agricultural leaders from around the state meeting in Columbus on Thursday.

The Product Safety Summit was being held at Ohio State University, and was focusing on foodborne illness, 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.

The economic impact of foodborne illness in the U.S. has cost the industry $152 billion, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The FDA hopes to have a set of safety proposals ready by October and the summit allows Ohio farmers to voice their input, Bell reported.

"Growers understand one of the things our consumers want is an assurance they're purchasing safe food," said vegetable farmer Bob Jones. "We all understand being healthy involves eating more fruits and vegetables.  It shouldn't be dangerous to do that."

The FDA was soliciting input on subjects including how to make irrigation water cleaner, pesticide use, and worker hygiene, Bell reported.
