Police are continuing to investigate what drove a man to shoot his wife and 9-year-old son, before turning the gun on himself, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

Neighbors living on Havens Corners Road described the couple as quiet and soft spoken and no one saw this coming, Kocot reported, but police said the slayings may have been planned.

A business partner called police early Thursday and asked them to check on the family.

That's when police found Robin Eckard, and 9-year-old Nicholas Eckard, shot to death in their beds.

Police said they found John Eckard in the living room, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police believe John Eckard planned the murders.

Investigators have recovered at least four letters they believe Eckard left for associates to find, Kocot reported.

Those included text messages Eckard sent to friends and family around 3:15 a.m. outlining the grim plans.

Police were still investigating.
