Man Charged With Stealing Cemetery Gates

Police on Sunday arrested a man for stealing cemetery gates.

Mark Daniel Mitchell was arrested at a Genessee Avenue home, after police received a tip.

The case had been named a Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week.

Mitchell, 31, has been charged with felony theft, for stealing bronze gates from the Greenlawn Abbey Mausoleum.

According to investigators, Mitchell removed 20 gates on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 and sold parts of them to a scrap metal dealer.

Each gate weighs at least 100 lbs. and dates back to the early 1900s and displayed the name of the person interned.

Investigators said they expect to make additional arrests.
