A church that has stood on the city's east side for more than 120 years was cleaning up Wednesday after it was targeted by vandals overnight.

It was the second time in a week that the Mount Vernon AME Church, located on Mount Vernon Avenue, has been hit with graffiti.

More than 20 profane messages were spray-painted around the building.

Pastor William Wheatley said he was not prepared to call the vandalism racism or gang-related, but he said he said the graffiti was troubling.

"Someone would have the attitude and sense of depravity to do an assault against the church," Wheatley said.

State Rep. Carlton Weddington, who lives near the church, was hopeful that the responsible parties would be caught.

"Clearly they're looking for attention, but the attention they're going to receive now is not going to be something that they're going to want," he said.

Cleanup was expected to cost several hundred dollars.
