Marla Taviano said her husband and three daughters spent weekends traveling in a minivan to different zoos. She said the idea started with a simple desire to see the world on a budget.
"I wanted to go on an adventure," she said. "I want to travel the world, but it's kind of hard to do if you don't have a lot of money."
Taviano said the idea to travel to zoos just kind of popped in her head.
"We could go to zoos around the country (and) see the animals that are from these other countries without having to go there," she said.
Taviano said she planned to write a book about her family's 22,000-mile journey.
She also said her children planned to write a book from their perspective.
