Fire investigators said that two fires on the south side that occurred within 24 hours were intentionally set.

The most recent fire took place on Thursday afternoon at a vacant home located at 622 E. Whittier Street, 10TV's Lindsey Seavert reported.

Arson investigators said that the fire was the 58th suspicious blaze set in south Columbus since January 2008. They are working to determine whether it was connected to others.

On Wednesday night, fire erupted in an abandoned factory on High Street and Barthman Avenue, also showing evidence of arson, Seavert reported.

Judy Shoemaker lives in the area around a sea of vacant homes.

She said that she has seen several homes burn and is watching out for herself.

"I sleep 3 to 4 hours (each) evening (and) then I am up, always looking out back," Shoemaker said.

So far, fire investigators have charged three people with arson but said their case is far from over.

They have said previously that gangs could be behind some of the fires.
