The parents of an Upper Arlington High School senior who lost both his legs to a flesh-eating bacterial infection released a statement Wednesday, saying their son was making progress and that they were optimistic about his recovery.

Doctors amputated Blake Haxton's legs after the 18-year-old was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis -- a rare infection that spreads underneath the skin, 10TV News reported.

He remained in critical condition Wednesday at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

Haxton was coaching basketball in a recreation league tournament last week when he complained about pain in his lower leg.  A short time later, doctors determined that Haxton, a highly-touted rower, had developed the infection.  His legs were amputated in order to keep the bacteria from spreading to the rest of his body.

Earlier this week, doctors said they were cautiously optimistic about Haxton's recovery after his heart began beating on its own and he was removed from life support.

In a statement released Wednesday, Blake's parents, Steve and Heather Haxton, thanked the hospital staff for the care their son has received.

"We would like to express our gratitude to the phenomenal doctors, nurses and support staff at Ohio State who, since Blake's arrival, have shown determination, commitment and kindness throughout his stay. They are truly world class."

The Haxtons also expressed thanks toward the rowing community, as well as toward members of their son's Upper Arlington High School family.

"Your continued prayers will remain a special blessing and sustaining source of encouragement as he faces his new challenges and for others who have been impacted by this disease," the statement read.
