Puppy Has Surgery For Broken Legs; Outlook Uncertain

A Shi Tzu puppy was recovering Friday after undergoing surgery to repair two broken legs, but the animal's outlook was not entirely positive.

According to Michelle Sahr, executive director of the Fairfield Area Humane Society, Smushy is still in danger of losing one of her legs, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported.

The 4-month old puppy was brought to the shelter last week with two broken legs.

During a closer examination, veterinarians discovered that a third leg was broken less than a month ago. X-rays showed the leg was repaired and vets removed pins and wire used to help heal the fracture.

While performing surgery on Thursday, even more injuries were discovered, Hirsch reported.

Sahr said that ligaments in one of Smushy's shoulders were completely torn.

No update on the dog's condition was released on Friday morning.

According to veterinarian Dr. Lynn Grinstead, X-rays of the dog's injuries did not prove that abuse occurred, but she does not think that the injuries were the result of a minor mishap.

"(It was) something traumatic," Grinstead said. "Not just a, 'Maybe I tripped over you on the floor.'  It was something more than that."
