A former pastor faces more than 20 felony charges after being accused of stealing more than $1
million from a church, 10TV's Andy Hirsch reported on Friday.
David Thompson allegedly stole the funds while he was pastor of the World Of Pentecost Church,
located on East Main Street.
He was pastor at the church from 1995 until 2007, Hirsch reported.
According to prosecutors, among other things, Thompson sold 19 acres of church land for more
than $900,000, claiming that the money would be used to build a new church. Instead, he allegedly
kept the profits for himself.
In 2007, a church employee reported missing funds, and investigators spent two years checking
financial records before filing charges, Hirsch reported.
"People obviously trust their pastor, so they don't check regularly on financial transactions
because you don't usually believe your pastor may be taking money belonging to the church," said
Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien.
Thompson was indicted Friday on charges that includes engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity,
tampering with records, money laundering, forgery and filing false returns.
