A woman who grew up in Whitehall remained hospitalized on Friday after her husband -- a decorated United States Marine -- allegedly attacked and beat her with a hammer.

According to North Carolina authorities, Cpl. Jonathan Gould tried to kill his pregnant wife, Erin Prince-Gould, during the early morning hours of Dec. 20.

Deputies said that Gould, 24, struck his wife over the head with a hammer and called 911 to report that an intruder had attacked his wife. Gould allegedly stabbed himself three times with a paring knife as part of an attempt to fabricate his story, deputies said.

Investigators said that Gould later admitted to attacking his wife. He has been charged with attempted murder in the case and remains in custody after a judge set bond earlier this week at $1 million.

Prince-Gould, 26, was in critical but stable condition after the attack.

Prince-Gould was in the first trimester of her pregnancy, but there was no update on the condition of her unborn child.
