A pool of mosquitoes in southern Franklin County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the Franklin County Board of Health announced Friday.
The test results, which came from Prairie Township in the western part of the county, are the first positive reports this season in the county.
According to the Franklin County Board of Health, the mosquitoes were collected this week from one of 38 traps set up across the county.
In June, the county received nearly 2 1/2 times the normal amount of rain and the excess water produced a large number of mosquitoes.
The southern end of Prairie Township is scheduled to be sprayed for mosquitoes on Monday starting at dusk. The area that will be sprayed includes neighborhoods generally north of Johnson Road, south of Broad Street, east of Alton Road and west of Galloway Road.
Health officials suggest residents to wear inspect repellant containing DEET, limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and to eliminate all standing water around the home.
