Doctors at the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine performed lifesaving surgery Wednesday on a puppy from an animal shelter born with a birth defect.

Annie was born in February at the Fairfield Area Humane Society with a heart defect. It restricted her esophagus and trachia, and kept her from keeping any food down.

Surgery was necessary to save Annie's life, but the humane society lacked the funds to pay for it.

Last week, the shelter publicized Annie's story on 10TV, and viewers responded with enough contributions to make the surgery possible.

The surgery was a success, but the puppy has a long road to recovery that includes hand feeding of a liquid diet.

Annie returned Wednesday night to her foster home with one of the workers at the shelter. The shelter's goal is to get her strong and healthy, and ready for a permanent home.
