The body of Carol Evans, 72, was discovered in her bed by her daughter Debby Crabtree, 10TV's
Maureen Kocot reported.
While deputies initially said Evans had been beaten to death, a medical examiner later ruled
that the former educator was strangled sometime between 3 and 6 a.m, Kocot reported.
Evans was well known in Jackson, where she spent decades as a teacher and principal at three
elementary schools. Generations of former students regularly stopped her on the street to say
hello.
"It is a great loss, not just to us, to our community," Crabtree said. "She was a wonderful
woman and she was a wonderful role model to so many."
Jackson County Sheriff John Shasteen said his department would not rest until they identified
Evans' killer.
"To find her frail, little 72-year-old body in that bed; I'd just like to know the coward that
did that," Shasteen said. "We're not going to stop until we find him."
Shasteen said his department was interviewing many who knew Evans, but no suspects were
identified.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office had been to Evans' home before in response to squabbles
between Evans and her husband, Dave, Kocot reported.
Deputies said that Dave Evans returned to Jackson from Myrtle Beach, S.C. after learning of
his wife's death, Kocot reported.
The investigation was ongoing.
